It's All Good
Saturday night has all the pre-Halloween trappings of a UGA fall break
speared in the middle by the away game in Florida - small but festively
costumed crowds. Taking the chill out of the early night air is Sean Arington,
a returned Athenian singing marginally acoustic folk-pop songs in the
Hot Corner cafe. Technically Sean is only just inside the coffee shop,
as he is ensconced between open French doors facing out onto Washington
Street with one amp pointing out and one directing his charmingly melodic
original compositions back into the room. Arington's gamble pays off instantly,
for where there are two or three people listening from inside, the passing
foot traffic is slowly congealing to take in the scene and pay this talented
soloist his due. Arington's sound and vibe is in the ballpark of Elliott
Smith, Colin Hay and Nick Drake, with a vocal range to match the change
of season and a smooth - but not overly slick - charismatic delivery.
Arington's guitar work is beyond the overly strummy sound preferred by
less skilled practitioners, and his lyrics are enchantingly open hearted,
oscillating between the sincere and the buoyant. Ben Gerrard
